The identity card is a document of identification and is needed to prove who you are (for example, it is needed to pick up a letter from the Post Office or to withdraw the analysis from the ASL)

It contains surname, name, date and place of birth, citizenship and residence address.
It can be made of paper or a magnetic card like an ATM.
When can I ask for it? / Quando posso chiederla?
When you have an unexpired residence permit, you are resident in Italy and registered at the Ufficio Anagrafe of the Comune where you live.
Where should I ask for it? / Dove devo chiederla?
At the Ufficio Anagrafe of your Comune. (search information from the section “Servizi del Comune) (For residents in the Comune of Florence you can do it in the offices of the Comune called PAD, look at http://servizi.comune.fi.it/servizi/scheda-servizio/punti-anagrafici-decentrati
Can I ask for my child under 18 years old? / Posso chiederla per mio figlio minore di 18 anni?
Yes, but both parents must be present at the Ufficio Anagrafe.
Can I use it to travel? / Posso usarla per viaggiare?
No. To travel outside Italy you must have a passport.
