Residence permit for study, training or internship / Permesso di soggiorno per studio, formazione o tirocinio

I have a visa for study or internship purposes or a residence permit for study issued by a State in the Schengen Area and I want to attend a university course, an upper secondary education course, a vocational training course or an internship for a period of more than 3 months.

What should I do? / Cosa devo fare?
You must apply for a residence permit for study, training or internship.

When should I apply? / Quando devo fare la domanda?
You must apply within 8 days of entry into Italy.

What documents do I need? / Quali documenti mi servono?
·    1 tax stamp of 16 euros
·    photocopy of the passport (all pages except blank ones)
·    photocopy of the pre-registration to the course demonstrating the course to follow, stamped by the Italian Embassy or Consulate in your country when the entry visa is issued
·    photocopy of the course enrolment
·    photocopy of the insurance against the risk of illness and accidents, valid in Italy, for the duration of the course
·    demonstration of your economic resources necessary for the period in which you are in Italy (eg: have a scholarship, a credit card, an active current account, ...)
·    in case of internship: photocopy of the internship training project
·    receipt of the payment of residence permit

Attention: if you have a residence permit for study issued by a State in the Schengen Area you also need:
·    documents demonstrating that you participate in an exchange program or authorization to stay for study reasons in a European Union State for at least 2 years
·    documents showing that the new study program in Italy serves to complete the already finished study program. The documents must be issued by the University of the European Union State where you have attended the study course.

How should I apply? / Come devo fare la domanda?
1.    Go to the Sportello amico at the Post Office and pick up the kit (an envelope, the form and instructions).
2.    Fill out the form and send the application for residence permit and documents.
Attention: for help you can contact the Sportello Immigrazione of your Comune, a Patronato (employers’ organization) or a CAF (Tax Assistance Center).
3.    The post office will tell you when you have to go to the Questura for the first appointment and will give you the postal receipt of the residence permit application.  Attention: this receipt is important because it shows that you can stay in Italy.
4.    Go to the Questura on the day of the appointment and bring 4 passport photographs. Then they will have your fingerprints taken.
Attention: if your age is more than 16 years old and you have applied for a residence permit that lasts for 1 year or more, you must sign the Integration Agreement at Questura.
5.    The Questura will then send you a text message to tell you the day you need to go to the Immigration Office of the Questura to collect your residence permit.
Attention: you may also receive a rejection letter.
